Mt. Unzen (雲仙岳) is a volcano near Shimabara in Nagasaki Prefecture on the island of Kyushu in Japan. On June 3, 1991, it claimed the lives of vulcanologists Katia Krafft and Maurice Krafft. Flooding carried ash and rock down the valley, destroying homes in the area.
