Saguache is a town located in Saguache County, Colorado. As of the 2000 census, the town had a total population of 578. It is the county seat of Saguache County6.


Saguache is located at 38°5'14" North, 106°8'29" West (38.087104, -106.141510)1.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 1.0 km² (0.4 mi²). 1.0 km² (0.4 mi²) of it is land and none of it is covered by water.


As of the census of 2000, there are 578 people, 262 households, and 160 families residing in the town. The population density is 587.3/km² (1,510.7/mi²). There are 328 housing units at an average density of 333.3/km² (857.3/mi²). The racial makeup of the town is 79.93% White, 0.00% African American, 2.60% Native American, 0.17% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 13.15% from other races, and 4.15% from two or more races. 34.43% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 262 households out of which 26.0% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 45.4% are married couples living together, 12.2% have a female householder with no husband present, and 38.9% are non-families. 33.6% of all households are made up of individuals and 17.2% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.14 and the average family size is 2.73.

In the town the population is spread out with 23.0% under the age of 18, 5.2% from 18 to 24, 25.8% from 25 to 44, 28.5% from 45 to 64, and 17.5% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 41 years. For every 100 females there are 99.3 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 91.0 males.
