Roads and Expressways in Poland

Poland has a well developed infrastructure of roads and expressways. The total length of roads in Poland is 364,656 km. There are several main expressways (autostrada), and an extensive network of highways connecting all major cities.

Polish expressways connect Poland's main industrial cities with one another. There are currently four major expressways in existance, and a number of planned ones under construction. The expressways (autostrada) are identified numerically, with the letter A preceeding it (eg. A4).

Current expressways are the A1 (from Warsaw to Katowice and Czech border), the A2 (from Poznan to Konin), the A3 (from Germany to Szczecin), and the A4 (from Germany to Krakow).

There are a number of planned expansions of the expressway system in Poland, especially now with Poland's membership in the European Union. The expansion projects are in various stages of planning and construction, with the major ones occuring on the A4 (expand it to the border with Ukraine), and the A2 (expand it to the border with Germany, and connect it to Lodz and Warsaw).


Poland also has a large number of two-lane and four-lane highways which connect all other areas of the country not serviced by the main expressways. These are supplemented by a network of well maintained side roads, and local paved routes.

City Freeways

With the exception of Warsaw, Szczecin, and the Tricity area, most of Poland's cities do not have a well developed freeway system within the city. Most highways and expressways end as a city begins, and they turn into regular surface streets. This is due largely because of the fact that city construction is so dense, and existing city transit systems so important, that the destruction of either in order to construct an inner-city freeway network is viewed as unbeneficial.
