Plains is a town located in Yoakum County, Texas. As of the 2000 census, the town had a total population of 1,450. It is the county seat of Yoakum County6.


Plains is located at 33°11'25" North, 102°49'39" West (33.190251, -102.827578)1.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 2.6 km² (1.0 mi²). 2.6 km² (1.0 mi²) of it is land and none of the area is covered with water.


As of the census of 2000, there are 1,450 people, 485 households, and 390 families residing in the town. The population density is 565.5/km² (1,465.6/mi²). There are 569 housing units at an average density of 221.9/km² (575.1/mi²). The racial makeup of the town is 69.66% White, 0.00% African American, 0.76% Native American, 0.07% Asian, 0.07% Pacific Islander, 27.79% from other races, and 1.66% from two or more races. 53.03% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 485 households out of which 42.3% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 68.0% are married couples living together, 8.9% have a female householder with no husband present, and 19.4% are non-families. 17.1% of all households are made up of individuals and 8.7% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.98 and the average family size is 3.37.

In the town the population is spread out with 32.6% under the age of 18, 8.1% from 18 to 24, 27.4% from 25 to 44, 20.7% from 45 to 64, and 11.2% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 34 years. For every 100 females there are 97.0 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 91.0 males.
