Plains is a town located in Sanders County, Montana. As of the 2000 census, the town had a total population of 1,126.


Plains is located at 47°27'31" North, 114°53'6" West (47.458504, -114.885024)1.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 1.5 km² (0.6 mi²). 1.5 km² (0.6 mi²) of it is land and none of it is covered by water.


As of the census of 2000, there are 1,126 people, 472 households, and 297 families residing in the town. The population density is 776.3/km² (2,005.3/mi²). There are 532 housing units at an average density of 366.8/km² (947.4/mi²). The racial makeup of the town is 95.91% White, 0.09% African American, 1.24% Native American, 0.36% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.36% from other races, and 2.04% from two or more races. 2.93% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 472 households out of which 27.8% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 48.1% are married couples living together, 11.4% have a female householder with no husband present, and 36.9% are non-families. 32.4% of all households are made up of individuals and 16.7% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.31 and the average family size is 2.88.

In the town the population is spread out with 25.4% under the age of 18, 5.9% from 18 to 24, 22.1% from 25 to 44, 24.2% from 45 to 64, and 22.5% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 42 years. For every 100 females there are 92.8 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 90.9 males.

The median income for a household in the town is $26,331, and the median income for a family is $30,893. Males have a median income of $26,875 versus $16,058 for females. The per capita income for the town is $13,010. 20.3% of the population and 16.7% of families are below the poverty line.
