Newton-John's musical career dates back to her early childhood. She returned to the UK during the 1960s, and joined the band, Toomorrow, named after the film for which they provided the soundtrack. Although the band were commercially unsuccessful, Olivia Newton-John's solo career soon took off, helped by her relationship with Shadows' guitarist, Bruce Welch, and appearances on Cliff Richard's weekly show. By the time she represented the UK in the 1974 Eurovision Song Contest, she was one of Britain's most popular singers.

Shortly afterwards, she moved to the USA, where she became a leading singer in both popular and country music. She had five number one hits, including the song "Physical", which stayed in the charts for ten weeks, and received four Grammyss.

She also starred in the highly successful 1978 film version of the musical Grease, alongside John Travolta. However, her subsequent films, like Xanadu and Two of a Kind, had little success. She has occasionally appeared in TV movies and series episodes from time-to-time. Her most recent appearances were on an episode of the CBS series Murphy Brown, and in the independent film Sordid Lives.

Newton-John, who has a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in recognition of her outstanding career, was married to Matt Lattanzi from 1984 to 1995. There is one child from this marriage, Chloe Rose Lattanzi (aka simply Chloe Rose), born in 1986. Since 1996 she has lived with Patrick McDermott, a cameraman. In 1992 she underwent breast-cancer surgery from which she recovered recently.

Her maternal grandfather was Max Born, a German Nobel prize-winning physicist. Her niece is singer and entertainer Tottie Goldsmith.
