Montrose is a city located in Montrose County, Colorado. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 12,344. It is the county seat of Montrose County6.


Montrose is located at 38°28'37" North, 107°51'56" West (38.476952, -107.865544)1.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 29.7 km² (11.5 mi²). 29.7 km² (11.5 mi²) of it is land and none of it is covered by water.


As of the census of 2000, there are 12,344 people, 5,244 households, and 3,319 families residing in the city. The population density is 415.5/km² (1,076.3/mi²). There are 5,581 housing units at an average density of 187.9/km² (486.6/mi²). The racial makeup of the city is 89.01% White, 0.44% African American, 0.98% Native American, 0.58% Asian, 0.07% Pacific Islander, 6.55% from other races, and 2.38% from two or more races. 17.36% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 5,244 households out of which 28.2% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 49.8% are married couples living together, 10.2% have a female householder with no husband present, and 36.7% are non-families. 31.9% of all households are made up of individuals and 16.2% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.29 and the average family size is 2.88.

In the city the population is spread out with 23.9% under the age of 18, 7.2% from 18 to 24, 25.8% from 25 to 44, 22.5% from 45 to 64, and 20.6% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 40 years. For every 100 females there are 90.8 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 87.2 males.

The median income for a household in the city is $33,750, and the median income for a family is $42,017. Males have a median income of $30,674 versus $21,067 for females. The per capita income for the city is $18,097. 14.7% of the population and 11.3% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total people living in poverty, 19.9% are under the age of 18 and 9.8% are 65 or older.
