List of longest rivers

This is a List of the longest rivers in the world by decreasing order.

The length of rivers is not always easy to calculate, particularly in those rivers where a number of small tributaries merge to form a large river. As a result, this list is not without contention: In particular, some say the Amazon is longer than the Nile.

The United States government, as an example, defines river length as "the distance to the outflow point from the original headwaters where the name defines the complete length." (Statistical Abstract of the U.S., 1986) However, that definition still leaves the choice of "original headwaters" up to observers and the often quoted Mississippi-Missouri doesn't seem to follow this rule.
