Austria first became a center of Jewish learning during the 13th century. In 1669 the Jews were expelled, to be formally readmitted in 1848. By the 1930s, Austria once again had a sizable Jewish community (300,000, mostly in Vienna), which contributed strongly to cultural life. Following the Anschluss with Nazi Germany, most of the community either emigrated or were killed in the Holocaust (the current Jewish population is under 8,000). The following is a list of some prominent Austrian Jews.
