Hughes County, Oklahoma

Hughes County is a county located in the U.S. State of Oklahoma. As of 2000, the population is 14,154. Its county seat is Holdenville6.

Geography

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 2,110 km² (815 mi²). 2,089 km² (807 mi²) of it is land and 20 km² (8 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.97% water.

Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 14,154 people, 5,319 households, and 3,675 families residing in the county. The population density is 7/km² (18/mi²). There are 6,237 housing units at an average density of 3/km² (8/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 72.77% White, 4.48% Black or African American, 16.18% Native American, 0.21% Asian, 0.02% Pacific Islander, 0.98% from other races, and 5.36% from two or more races. 2.49% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 5,319 households out of which 28.80% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 53.50% are married couples living together, 11.30% have a female householder with no husband present, and 30.90% are non-families. 28.60% of all households are made up of individuals and 16.00% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.42 and the average family size is 2.96.

In the county, the population is spread out with 23.20% under the age of 18, 8.00% from 18 to 24, 27.20% from 25 to 44, 23.20% from 45 to 64, and 18.60% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 39 years. For every 100 females there are 105.80 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 105.50 males.

The median income for a household in the county is $22,621, and the median income for a family is $29,153. Males have a median income of $22,337 versus $18,029 for females. The per capita income for the county is $12,687. 21.90% of the population and 16.70% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total people living in poverty, 27.40% are under the age of 18 and 17.60% are 65 or older.
