The hryvnia or hryvnya (Гривня) has been the national currency of Ukraine since 1996 when it replaced the "coupon", the temporary currency used after Ukraine left the Soviet Union and the rouble zone.

The name is very old; it was the national currency of the Kievan Rus' in the 11th century. The ISO 4217 currency code for the hryvnia is UAH. The hryvnia is divided into 100 kopiykas.

The hryvnia sign as been accepted for encoding in Unicode as U+20B4 in 2004.
