Grease (movie)

Grease is the name of a movie based on Jim Jacobs and Warren Casey's musical, Grease.

Warning: Plot details follow.

The film version was released in 1978, with John Travolta and Olivia Newton-John as stars. Travolta played Danny and Newton-John played Sandy in the movie. In the summer of 1958, Danny, leader of Rydell Highs boy gang The T-Birds, visits Australia. There, he meets Sandy at the beach and they fall in love. However, with the beginning of a new class semester, Danny must return to the United States. Sandy is portrayed as a typical innocent girl.

Sandy, meanwhile, is chosen to attend Rydell High as an exchange student. She meets a group of girls named the Pink Ladies and makes friends with them quickly. Not realizing their luck, both Danny and Sandy let their friends know of their romantic conquests back in Australia.

Eventually, Danny and Sandy run into each other, and they decide to revive their romance, but not without trouble (such as the scene when Danny tries to have sex with Sandy and she runs out of his car). They are pestered, however, by a gang named The Scorpions, who are enemies of the T-Birds. Danny challenges the leader of The Scorpions to a car race, and then he and his friends build a race car. He goes on to beat the leader of The Scorpions.

Towards the end of the movie, a new, badder looking Sandy emerges, leading into a scene where everyone in school begins dancing after graduation. Danny picks her up in his car, and the car then takes off flying, with Danny and Sandy joined in love forever.

Although Travolta was already famous for his movie Saturday Night Fever, it was Grease that reconfirmed his status as a celebrity. As for Newton-John, her fame also reached new heights after the movie.

The movie's soundtrack was a number 1 album in many different countries. In the UK, the two Travolta/Newton-John duets, "You're The One That I Want" and "Summer Nights" were both number one hits and appear eighth and 21st respectively in the official all-time UK best-selling singles list issued in 2002.

A 1982 sequel, Grease 2, was much less successful.
