Garvin County, Oklahoma

Garvin County is a county located in the U.S. State of Oklahoma. As of 2000, the population is 27,210. Its county seat is Pauls Valley6.


According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 2,107 km² (814 mi²). 2,091 km² (807 mi²) of it is land and 16 km² (6 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.76% water.


As of the census2 of 2000, there are 27,210 people, 10,865 households, and 7,605 families residing in the county. The population density is 13/km² (34/mi²). There are 12,641 housing units at an average density of 6/km² (16/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 84.93% White, 2.55% Black or African American, 7.36% Native American, 0.23% Asian, 0.04% Pacific Islander, 1.54% from other races, and 3.34% from two or more races. 3.40% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 10,865 households out of which 30.70% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 56.40% are married couples living together, 10.10% have a female householder with no husband present, and 30.00% are non-families. 26.90% of all households are made up of individuals and 14.30% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.45 and the average family size is 2.96.

In the county, the population is spread out with 24.80% under the age of 18, 8.10% from 18 to 24, 26.00% from 25 to 44, 23.10% from 45 to 64, and 17.90% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 39 years. For every 100 females there are 92.70 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 88.80 males.

The median income for a household in the county is $28,070, and the median income for a family is $34,774. Males have a median income of $28,033 versus $18,940 for females. The per capita income for the county is $14,856. 15.90% of the population and 11.40% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total people living in poverty, 18.60% are under the age of 18 and 14.30% are 65 or older.
