Darkthrone began its existence as a death metal outfit with their first full-length album Soulside Journey. Soon afterward, possibly due to the influence of Euronymous of the band Mayhem, Darkthrone decided that the death metal idiom was no longer relevant. They subsequently recorded and released the album A Blaze in the Northern Sky. Although strongly inspired by the works of Bathory and Celtic Frost, this album achieved a unique sound by bringing punk-like simplicity and chaos to metal. Their further albums explored the themes of corrosive sound, abraded recording, and musical simplicity. Darkthrone to this day remain the a powerful force in the black metal genre. They have gone on to inspire legions of bands who play this most primitive of styles.
