Coweta, Oklahoma

Coweta is a city in Wagoner County, Oklahoma. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 7,139.


Coweta is located at 35°57'47" North, 95°39'42" West (35.963155, -95.661586)1.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 19.9 km² (7.7 mi²). 19.6 km² (7.6 mi²) of it is land and 0.3 km² (0.1 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 1.56% water.


As of the census of 2000, there are 7,139 people, 2,582 households, and 1,988 families residing in the city. The population density is 363.6/km² (942.1/mi²). There are 2,827 housing units at an average density of 144.0/km² (373.1/mi²). The racial makeup of the city is 75.78% White, 4.08% African American, 11.85% Native American, 0.21% Asian, 0.01% Pacific Islander, 1.75% from other races, and 6.32% from two or more races. 3.80% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 2,582 households out of which 43.0% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 58.5% are married couples living together, 13.9% have a female householder with no husband present, and 23.0% are non-families. 19.9% of all households are made up of individuals and 6.6% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.74 and the average family size is 3.14.

In the city the population is spread out with 30.9% under the age of 18, 9.6% from 18 to 24, 31.0% from 25 to 44, 20.0% from 45 to 64, and 8.6% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 31 years. For every 100 females there are 95.1 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 90.5 males.

The median income for a household in the city is $38,255, and the median income for a family is $41,786. Males have a median income of $32,348 versus $21,772 for females. The per capita income for the city is $14,960. 7.4% of the population and 6.2% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total people living in poverty, 7.4% are under the age of 18 and 11.1% are 65 or older.
