Alfalfa County, Oklahoma

Alfalfa County is a county located in the U.S. State of Oklahoma. As of 2000, the population is 6,105. Its county seat is Cherokee6.


According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 2,283 km² (881 mi²). 2,245 km² (867 mi²) of it is land and 38 km² (15 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 1.68% water.


As of the census2 of 2000, there are 6,105 people, 2,199 households, and 1,482 families residing in the county. The population density is 3/km² (7/mi²). There are 2,832 housing units at an average density of 1/km² (3/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 89.42% White, 4.19% Black or African American, 2.74% Native American, 0.11% Asian, 0.05% Pacific Islander, 1.38% from other races, and 2.11% from two or more races. 2.90% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 2,199 households out of which 26.90% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 59.30% are married couples living together, 5.70% have a female householder with no husband present, and 32.60% are non-families. 31.00% of all households are made up of individuals and 17.60% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.29 and the average family size is 2.86.

In the county, the population is spread out with 19.40% under the age of 18, 6.40% from 18 to 24, 28.70% from 25 to 44, 25.20% from 45 to 64, and 20.40% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 42 years. For every 100 females there are 131.00 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 142.00 males.

The median income for a household in the county is $30,259, and the median income for a family is $35,000. Males have a median income of $24,067 versus $17,944 for females. The per capita income for the county is $14,704. 13.70% of the population and 11.80% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total people living in poverty, 18.30% are under the age of 18 and 9.60% are 65 or older.
