Adair County, Oklahoma

Adair County is a county located in the U.S. State of Oklahoma. As of 2000, the population is 21,038. Its county seat is Stilwell6.


According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 1,494 km² (577 mi²). 1,491 km² (576 mi²) of it is land and 4 km² (1 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.24% water.


As of the census2 of 2000, there are 21,038 people, 7,471 households, and 5,565 families residing in the county. The population density is 14/km² (36/mi²). There are 8,348 housing units at an average density of 6/km² (14/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 48.52% White, 0.18% Black or African American, 42.49% Native American, 0.10% Asian, 0.02% Pacific Islander, 1.25% from other races, and 7.45% from two or more races. 3.12% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 7,471 households out of which 37.30% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 57.10% are married couples living together, 12.90% have a female householder with no husband present, and 25.50% are non-families. 22.80% of all households are made up of individuals and 9.80% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.76 and the average family size is 3.25.

In the county, the population is spread out with 30.30% under the age of 18, 8.90% from 18 to 24, 27.20% from 25 to 44, 21.60% from 45 to 64, and 12.00% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 33 years. For every 100 females there are 97.20 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 94.40 males.

The median income for a household in the county is $24,881, and the median income for a family is $29,525. Males have a median income of $23,741 versus $19,720 for females. The per capita income for the county is $11,185. 23.20% of the population and 19.40% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total people living in poverty, 28.20% are under the age of 18 and 23.70% are 65 or older.
